5 Essential Computer Maintenance Tips

Most laptops and desktops don't fail overnight — they degrade gradually because of a handful of habits that get skipped. The good news is that all five of the fixes below take minutes, not hours, and they're exactly what we check first on every AMC visit.

1. Clean Dust and Keep Airflow Clear

Dust buildup on fans and heatsinks is the single biggest cause of overheating, which in turn causes throttling, random shutdowns, and shortened component life. Wipe down external vents monthly, and have the internal fans and heatsinks professionally cleaned every 6–12 months, more often if you're in a dusty environment or run the machine on a bed or carpet that blocks the vents.

2. Keep Your OS and Drivers Updated

Pending Windows/macOS updates and outdated drivers are behind a large share of the "slow computer" complaints we see. Updates patch security holes and fix the exact bugs that cause freezes and crashes. Set updates to install automatically, and don't defer them for months at a time.

3. Uninstall Bloatware and Trim Startup Programs

Every extra program that launches at startup competes for the same RAM and disk I/O. Review your startup apps (Task Manager on Windows, Login Items on macOS) and disable anything you don't use daily. Uninstall trial software and toolbars you never use.

4. Run Disk Cleanup and Check Drive Health

A drive that's nearly full slows everything down, especially on laptops with smaller SSDs. Clear temporary files and old downloads regularly, and if your machine is unusually slow to boot or save files, it's worth checking the drive's health — a failing SSD or HDD gives early warning signs before it fails completely.

  • Clear browser cache and temporary files monthly
  • Uninstall applications you haven't opened in 6+ months
  • Keep at least 15–20% of your drive free for the OS to work efficiently

5. Practice Antivirus and Download Hygiene

Keep a reputable antivirus active and updated, avoid downloading software from unofficial sources, and be cautious with email attachments. Malware is one of the most common causes of the "my computer suddenly got slow" call we receive.

Doing all five consistently is easy to let slip when you're busy running a home or a business — which is exactly what our Annual Maintenance Contracts are built for: a scheduled visit catches these before they turn into a breakdown.
