
DIY Network & Wi-Fi Troubleshooting
Before you call a technician, most Wi-Fi problems can be narrowed down — or fixed outright — with a few checks that take less time than the call itself.
1. Check Router Placement and Dead Zones
Wi-Fi signal degrades through walls, floors, metal, and distance. A router tucked inside a cabinet or in a far corner of the house is the single most common cause of "weak signal in the bedroom" complaints. Place it centrally, elevated, and away from metal cabinets, microwaves, and thick walls where possible.
2. Power-Cycle Before You Troubleshoot Further
Turn off the router and modem, wait 30 seconds, and turn them back on — modem first, then router. This clears temporary memory issues and forces a fresh connection to your ISP, and it resolves a surprising share of "internet is down" cases on its own.
3. Check for Firmware Updates
Router manufacturers regularly ship firmware updates that fix stability and security issues. Log into your router's admin page (usually via a browser at its local IP address) and check for a pending update — routers running years-old firmware are disproportionately represented in the "randomly drops connection" tickets we see.
4. Separate Your 2.4GHz and 5GHz Bands
Most modern routers broadcast both bands. 2.4GHz reaches further but is slower and more congested (it's shared with many household devices); 5GHz is faster but has shorter range. If your router combines them under one network name, consider splitting them so you can manually connect bandwidth-heavy devices to 5GHz when you're near the router.
- Restart router + modem before anything else
- Move the router to a central, elevated, open location
- Check firmware updates every few months
- Use 5GHz for streaming/gaming devices near the router, 2.4GHz for distant/IoT devices
When to Call a Professional
If you've done all of the above and still have dead zones, frequent drops, or you're setting up a multi-floor office rather than a single flat, it's usually more cost-effective to have a proper site survey than to keep buying extenders.
